Keyword Filters

Keyword Filters allow you to target specific keywords to specific urls or groups of URLs.

To achieve this we map groups of keywords onto URL fragments i.e. a full URL or part of a URL.

This works well when targetting large numbers of URLs that use “friendly URLs”, the reason being is that the URL usually contains the title of the page, and the title of the page contains our keywords. Consider the URL of this page for example which features the page title “keyword filters”

Another benefit of this system is that we can import and re-use filters between projects and have no convoluted “spintax” to maintain.

Accessing Keyword Filters

There are two entry points for keyword filters it does not matter which you use

1) Directly from the individual project settings, where you will see a link to “Keyword Filters” near the top of the page:

2) From the Manage Projects Page:

After using one of the above (two) options you will be taken to the “Keyword Filters” page for the given project.

Keyword Filters Overview

The following screen shot gives an overview of all fields in the Keyword Filters page. We will go into detail on each section further down:

Understanding Order of Precedence

As more than one filter can be applied to a given URL we have a system of precedence or priority to determine which should be applied.

The “Default Keywords” applied in the edit project page take the lowest priortity and will only be applied to unmapped URLs (URLs for which there are no keyword filters defined).

Assuming Keyword Filters are in use then we must pay attention to the “Filter Type” Drop Down List:

which contains three values:

  • Standard > This will prioritise filters based on the length of the URL string entered. The longer the URL string the more important it is considered to be
  • Root > This is for homepage links (root domain) and will take percedence over every other filter but ONLY for the homepage. You must enter your domain name when using this type (for example “autobacklinksdaily.com“)
  • Catch All > This takes the lowest priority of the keyword filter types and is intended to allow targeting of multiple domain names within the same project. We would typically enter a domain name in this filter (for example “autobacklinksdaily.com“)
Why We Do This
  • The longer a Standard filter is the more specific it is and thus we give it higher priority.
  • The Root option is to allow the potentially shorter domain name to take precedence over the standard type to allow the setting of homepage links even when the URL is shorter than a matching standard filter.
  • The “Catch All” allows us to set default keywords for different domains where there are multiple domains being promoted in the same project. So, if no Standard filter matches the url we then default to the “Catch All” for a domain name.

Use the Test Mode! After setting up your filters you can view the results as clickable links in the test page

Adding Filters

To add a new keyword filter we use the options at the top of the page:

As can be seen above there are three fields required for a Keyword Filter:

  • URL String > A portion of the URL we wish to match
  • Keywords > Keywords to match to the URL string one per line
  • Filter Type (discussed above)

URL Strings:

These can be any word or snippet that appears in the URL, for example “cat” would match:

  • http://bestcatcaresite.info/keeping-cats-happy/
  • http://bestcatcaresite.info/stop-cats-catching-mice/

whereas URL strings: “cats-climbing“, “climbing“, “curtains” or “curt” would only match one of the above URL’s

  • http://bestcatcaresite.info/prevent-cats-climbing-curtains/
  • http://bestcatcaresite.info/prevent-cats-climbing-curtains/
  • http://bestcatcaresite.info/prevent-cats-climbing-curtains/

 Keywords

  • Add one keyword or phrase per line to match the URL string you have entered.
  • Keep keywords short as there are character limits in the fields links are posted to

Filter Types

You do not need to use all Filter types, most people only ever use the default “Standard” type. The others (root and catch all) are only there for homepage targeting or projects where you are promoting multiple domains.

Add High Precedence Filters First!

When adding filters it is best to apply them in order of precedence (most specific first) so that items are not removed from the “Unmapped URLs” list based on generic  keywords (see Unmapped URLs section further down).

  1. Root – Your Homepage Settings
  2. Standard Longest URL Strings First
  3. Catch All

Manging Current Filters

Every filter you add will be shown in the “Current Filters” section:

  • All fields within the Current Filters section are editable. Changes can be saved with the “Update” button
  • Each filter has a “Delete” button to the right

Import Keyword Filters from Other Projects

If you have other projects using similar URL and Keyword structures you can re-use them by importing into other projects:

  • Chose the project you want to import from using the drop down list
  • Click the “Import Filters” button

After doing this you will see filters are imported for the current working project.

Unmapped Urls

Before you start adding keyword filters you will see a full list of URLs from your project at the bottom of the page:

  • This is a list of URLs for which there are no applicable filters
  • As you add filters URLs will be removed from this section

The reason we suggest adding the most specific filters first is because a single “broad match” filter can remove all your URLs before you have chance to apply more specific ones.

So, start with the most specific filters first for your most important URLs and Keywords, adding broader filters last of all.
